Cake

  • 2eggs(separated)
  • 1.5 cupssugar(divided)
  • 1.25 cupsall-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cupsHERSHEY'S cocoa
  • 0.75 tspbaking soda
  • 0.5 tspsalt
  • 0.5 cupsvegetable oil
  • 1 cupbuttermilk or sour milk

Chocolate Cream Filling

  • 0.67 cupssugar
  • 0.33 cupcocoa
  • 1.5 cupswhipping cream
  • 1.5 tspvanilla

Chocolate Glaze

  • 3 Tbspbutter
  • 3 Tbsplight corn syrup
  • 1 Tbspwater
  • 1 cupchocolate chips

Instructions

Cake

  1. 1Heat oven to 350 F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.
  2. 2In small mixer bowl, beat egg whites until foamy; gradually add 1/2 cup sugar, beating until stiff peaks form.
  3. 3In large mixer bowl, stir together remaining 1 cup sugar, flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt. Add oil, buttermilk and egg yolks; beat until smooth. Gently fold egg whites into batter. Pour batter into prepared pans.
  4. 4Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until cake springs back when touched lightly in center. Cool 5 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely.

Chocolate Cream Filling

  1. 1In small mixer bowl, combine 2/3 cups sugar and 1/3 cup cocoa. Add 1 1/2 cups whipping cream and 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla. Beat on low speed of electric mixer until blended. Beat on medium speed until stiff.

Chocolate Glaze

  1. 1In small saucepan, combine 3 tbsp. butter, 3 tbsp. light corn syrup and 1 tbsp. water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture begins to boil. Remove from heat and add 1 cup chocolate chips, stirring until melted. Cool to room temperature.

Assembly

  1. 1With long serrated knife, cut each cake layer horizontally in half. Spread one cake layer with one-third of chocolate cream filling; top with second layer. Repeat procedure ending with plain layer on top.
  2. 2Prepare chocolate glaze; glaze cake. Decorate with chocolate leaves, if desired. Refrigerate until serving time. Cover; refrigerate leftover torte.
